Jaden + Connor’s Motocross Birthday Party

I feel lucky that I have kids with birthdays pretty close to each other. On July 17th, my son Connor turned 1 and on August 26th, my son Jaden turned 7. I hadn’t had any big birthday parties for Jaden the past couple years, we typically just took him to do something special. This year Jaden asked if he could have a birthday party with friends. So I decided to throw them a joint birthday this year.

Jaden loves dirt bikes and knew instantly that he wanted his party theme to be Eli Tomac/Monster Energy Supercross. Since he’s been racing over the summer at the Portland International Raceway, we decided to have his party during Thursday Night Motocross so that some of his friends could come watch him race and cheer him on!

For decorations we went with the theme colors black and green (even though Jaden rides a KTM). I framed his birthday invitation and the schedule of events along with a wood framed signed that I made him which included all of his favorite riders & WELLS at the end (my kids’ last name).

For food they had a Papa Murphy’s truck that we ordered pizza from. We also had chips and popcorn for the kids to eat in the stands. For sips, Jaden chose to serve lemonade and water with water bottle labels that matched the invitation. We also had Monster Energy drinks for the adults, and of course beer at the Moto Cafe.

For party favors we went with Race Flags, Glow Sticks, Lollipops and VIP/Pit Passes. It was fun to see all the kids in the stands wearing their badges and waving their flags high as Jaden rode on by.

I also had my mom help me write a sweet poem to go along with all the goodies:

KIDS!

Grab a flag and wave it high as all the riders pass us by

Wear a glowstick to light the way because motocross is here today

A lollipop is yours to take and don’t forget your VIP Pass for goodness sake!

Eli Tomac is his fave by far, but keep these treats from our favorite – our future

MX Superstar

We ordered a blank cake from Costco. We figured it would feed the most amount of people for a low cost. Jaden picked out chocolate with vanilla frosting. I then took the design from the invitations I created and had a frosting decal made from A Birthday Place. Her turn around time was lightening speed and it turned out great! The birthday cake looked great on the table and went with the theme and decorations perfectly.

Then things took a turn for the worse… it was incredibly hot that day in Portland and the cake was melting! As we tried to place the cake in a cooler with ice to stop it from melting, the entire thing slid off layer by layer into the cooler. In a moment of panic, everyone helped me scoop the cake back onto the tray to create what looked like a very rainy/muddy dirt track after a light snowfall. So we plopped some dirt bike toys in it for the full effect and called it a dirt bike track. By the time the kids were ready to eat, even the candles had melted! So I ended up setting the cake on the table, told the kids to gather around, handed them all spoons – and said, “DIG IN!”. Needless to say, they all loved it and couldn’t care less that the cake was a mess.
